Meta Description

Meta Description is an HTML attribute that provides a brief summary of a page that shows up in search results. A well written meta description can highly influence user click-rate on your website. Google displays it right below the title and URL like you can see from the screenshot below.

Starting from version 1.3.12, Mercury lets you write meta descriptions with multi-language support. In case you don't want to spend time writing descriptions, the module will automatically use and excerpt of the article. Keep in mind that meta descriptions can't be longer than 320 characters but the ideal length should be between 70 and 160 characters.

OG Tag

Starting from version 1.2.1Mercury supports the Open Graph Protocol that is widely used by social media. It is very helpful when you're sharing an article on websites like Facebook and LinkedIn. They will automatically pull in a few pieces of information into your social post: URL, type, title, description and features image. Below you can find some examples.

Meta Keywords

Meta Keywords were very popular a decade ago but search englines including Google have stopped using this tag a long time ago because many site owners were abusing it. To this day there are still people asking if we can add meta keyword tag to Mercury but it would be a waste of time and useless therefore this is not going to happen.

HTML lang Attribute

Strictly speaking HTML Lang is not a meta tag but can still help with rankings. It's a small piece of HTML that is on top of every website. It is used by search engines to figure out what language page is written in. WHMCS doesn't care and always uses english but we can make an improvement.

Open the header.tpl file that is located in templates/{YOUR_TEMPLATE}. All you need to do is replace en with {$Mercury.LangHTML}. Mercury will do the rest.
